WHAT'S YOUR STORY?

At The Oxford Comma, we strive to provide a relaxed environment for new and aspiring writers to find a diverse place for feedback and encouragement. For seasoned writer's, we hope to give you a sense of accountability that may lead to publication, give fresh eyes on your work, and a space to share your knowledge. For beginning writer’s, this is a space for you to begin sharing your ideas and receive valuable (free!) input on how to grow.

OUR STORY

Two ladies, some pen, and some paper

The Oxford Comma was created by Savannah Suttle in August 2018 as a community writing workshop group to facilitate the critical reflection and analysis (“workshopping”) of the work written by local creative writers. Elizabeth met Savannah at the first “meeting” and the two of them shared for several hours their passion about writing. The workshop then moved to a new home, and took place at The Coop on top of the Graduate Hotel. After many successful turnouts every week, the event moved to a more private location in an apartment clubhouse. Our largest workshop to date boasted 28 writers, but our average meetings hold anywhere from 3-215 writers. Our focus is in providing a free workshop environment for all genres, ages, disciplines, experiences, races, sexualities, genders, and experiences, while not limiting participation to writers only in an academic setting or one that will incur costs. The Oxford Comma isn’t here to make money - it’s here to provide an outlet and a space for writers. In January 2019, Elizabeth Tettleton took over The Oxford Comma when Savannah relocated to Seattle, WA, and has since partnered with the Mississippi Writer’s Guild, Yoknapatawpha Arts Council, and Quasar to bring more robust programming to the community. In 2020, Eliot Parker came on as co-Director, and the Oxford Comma became the official Oxford, MS Chapter of the Mississippi Writers Guild.
